Middle East: The use of muted colours when making an architectural model.
As architectural model makers we often get asked to produce models which overemphasise colours especially greens for landscaping and trees in the hope the model portrays a look of a fertile environment and not that of being in a desert. When making models for the London market the complete opposite is expected with models showing muted and washed out colours which are toned down to match a models scale. It is important to remember when making a model that colours require scaling too as well as the building elements. Landscaping, trees and street furniture should blend in with the model in both size and colour.
This model is a good example how colours can be muted to match a model’s scale. All colours complement each other and no single element jumps out or is over emphasised. This toned down finish is achieved using a “frost” technique applied as a spray and usually benefits a model required for exhibition and marketing purposes. Models of this nature are lit for maximum effect via a light source housed within the model base. The “frost” finish helps catch the light and maximises the glow from the internal light source creating more of a “wow” factor model catching the viewer’s eye.
Colour options are programmed via a varying colour controller and any colour shade is achievable. By fitting an interactive touch screen display the viewer is engaged with detailed information about a specific area or feature available instantly at the user’s fingertips.
All model components are made in the usual way using parts laser cut from CAD drawings with the same surface details applied either as a laser cut line, score line or etched details.
The Mega Model at this year’s Abu Dhabi Cityscape.
Whilst strolling around this year’s Abu Dhabi Cityscape one can’t help but notice the huge mega model at the centre of Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council’s stand. The model is impressive in it’s size with the sole purpose to showcase Abu Dhabi’s future projects planned for completion by the year 2030.
Made in the UK, it’s amazing to think this model travelled in crates no bigger than a 2 seater sofa and was assembled piece by piece, each approximately one metre square. Zones and future developments are highlighted via information pods situated at key locations around the model.
This model shows how thinking big, although challenging at first, pays off eventually resulting in a model that will amaze and inform onlookers for many years to come.

Keeping standards high when making architectural models in the Middle East is a challenge.
We produce architectural models to UK standards with a London look and feel using various industry leading suppliers from around the world. High end materials are essential to produce high end models and we do everything we can to not compromise on this.
